Fr Alejandro served in his native Spain until 2001 when he was elected in Rome as Vicar General of the Order in 2001. This role involved his representation of the Order at the highest levels at ceremonies and meetings at which the Prior General was unable to attend because of other commitments.
The Augustinian Constitutions require the Prior General to nominate members of his Curia (Council), who then have to be voted into their offices by the General Chapter. Each of those who become an Assistant General was assigned his own section of the world in which to be the regular vehicle of liaison in both directions between the Prior General and that particular section of the globe.
Those elected (pictured above, with the Prior General fourth from the left)) to the new Prior General’s leadership team are: Joseph Farrell [eastern U.S.A.] Vicar General and Assistant General for North America, Edward Deleng [Nigeria], Assistant General for Africa; Eduardo Patricio Villaba Suarez [Quito, Ecuador], Assistant General for Latin America; Anthony Banks [Australia], Assistant General for Asia/Pacific; Francis Klein [Germany], Assistant General for Northern Europe; Luis Marin de San Martin [Spain], Assistant General Southern Europe; Miguel Angel Juarez [Spain], Procurator General and Matthias Hecht [Germany], Treasurer General.
As can be noted, the Curia is multi-national, which in turn reflects the Augustinian Order as a whole, serving as it does in over forty nations.
The Assistant General for the Asia-Pacific area (including Australia) is Fr Tony Banks O.S.A. Presently he is the Augustinian Provincial (leader) in Australia and South Korea, but will resign this position in the coming weeks because of his newest appointment.
