The AVA members for 2014 have committed themselves to a minimum one day’s AVA service per week for twelve months; some opt to serve for more hours than this weekly minimum time allocation, however, and the AVA member in Thailand is serving full-time. Five of these AVA members are in 2014 serving at least their second year with AVA. Each of them is prepared and supported by the AVA organisation, which assisted each of them in their placement with a reputable organisation that specializes in their social justice area of interest. The only program that AVA directly conducts is the numeracy/literacy/English tutorial ministry at Redfern, in association with an Aboriginal organisation called Tribal Warrior. Of the fifteen AVA members in 2014, eight of them are involved in placements which have an Aboriginal focus.
The 2014 placements are as follows:
One AVA in Parramatta – unemployed youth
One in Campbelltown – with young people from the streets
Four at Redfern – before-school Aboriginal youth mentoring
One in St Clair – with African women and children
Two in Darlington (Redfern) – after-school homework assistance for Aboriginal youth
Four “doubling up” Beginning in July (while also continuing their work above) - Bankstown - Mt Druitt literacy and numeracy tuition for Aboriginal youth (and to be joined by returning AVA members from former years.) As is the case in Redfern, this new venture will be directly conducted by AVA.
Two are presently finishing their 2014 AVA Preparatory Course with an online component, and will begin service in Sydney (probably with refugees) by July 2014.
One in Brisbane – Aboriginal work
One in South Yarra (Melbourne) – parish social justice ministries
One in Adelaide - refugee support work
One in Thailand – volunteer teacher of school-age Burmese refugee children. (First AVA overseas)
