John Heavey OSA was the youngest and the last of the six Augustinian bishops in Australia; he was born in 1868, which was fifty-six years after the birth of James Goold, who was the first of these six Augustinian bishops. John Heavey was the first Bishop of Cairns (1914 – 1948).

The year of Bishop Heavey’s death (1948) was also the opening year of the Order’s Villanova College in Brisbane. The bishop was interested in Catholic education, and as a newly-ordained priest in his native Ireland in 1891 had taught Latin and Greek at an Augustinian boarding school.
At his funeral in Cairns in 1948, the Principal (Rector) of Villanova arrived from Brisbane by aircraft in time for the Bishop’s funeral. In some sense, this symbolised a meeting of two eras within the Augustinian Order’s history in Queensland, with John Heavey the leader of parish ministry in Far North Queensland since 1914, and Fr Richard O’Donnell the leader of the Order’s first venture in Queensland into Catholic education, which Villanova continues in the Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo to this day.
